Nimesulide is a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) that was first marketed in Ireland in 1995. It was prescribed to treat acute pain, osteoarthritis and primary dysmenorrhea (period pain). Until its withdrawal in May, there were approx 30,000 prescriptions of Nimesulide written in Ireland per month.

It has emerged that Nimesulide can cause liver and kidney damage in patients and a COHORT study into the drug concluded the following:

  • Nimesulide increases the risk of adverse hepatic consequences by 30% in patients with NO HISTORY of liver or renal problems
  • Nimesulide increases the risk of adverse hepatic consequences by 90% in patients who have a history of liver or renal problems
