DePuy Hip Implant Problems – Pain, Metal Ion Release, Early Revision and Replacement
The problems that are now known to be caused by DePuy ASR™ Hip Replacement Implants have been experienced by many patients over the past 6 years. While the entire DePuy ASR™ platform may have critical errors, the ASR™ XL Monoblock Metal-on-Metal System and the DePuy ASR™ Resurfacing Platform in particular have, it is understood, exhibited the following problems for patients:
a)Cup portions of the ASR™ Hip Replacement are too loose, failing to secure itself against and within bone growth.
b)Site area tissue necrosis (death).
c)Metal ion (cobalt, chromium, molybdenum) infiltration into systemic circulation (i.e. metal toxicity).
d)Intense pain in or around the site of the hip replacement.
e)Significant soft tissue damage.
f)Consequential inflammatory reactions, both localised and systemic.
g)Bone loss, both significant and insignificant.
h)Necessity for second hip replacement surgery for the purposes of removing and cutting out any defective metal component.
In those circumstances the fact that, although metal-on-metal hip implants account for a significant proportion of the overall hip replacement procedures undertaken, DePuy's recall of its ASR™ Metal-on-Metal Hip Implant has damaged not only its own reputation but that of the whole metal-on-metal implant process from a general perspective. It should be remembered that DePuy is one of the larger worldwide makers of medical hip implant devices. Yet, although the company has significant expertise, it is now known that a large number of its hip implants may be causing physical consequences and, indeed, emotional worry. In addition, it is now appreciated that painful and costly surgical procedures will be required by patients arising out of these defective implants.
