Scientific research indicates that contraceptive pills containing drospirenone (i.e. a man made progesterone) such as Yaz/Yasmin carry a two to three fold increased relative risk of Venous Thrombeombloism (VTE). Research published in the British Medical Journal has found that there is a two to three fold increased relative risk of VTE associated with the use of drospirenone-containing contraceptives such as Yasmin compared to other levonorgestrel-containing contraceptives. In these studies the incidence of VTE was about 20-30 cases per 100,000 women-years of use with drospirenone-containing contraceptives and about 10 cases per 100,000 women-years of use with levonorgestrel-containing contraceptives. Medical research in Europe and the US, report that complaints from Yaz/Yasmin users include women who have suffered blood clots, pulmonary embolisms, gallbladder removals, and other serious medical conditions.
