Toxic Chemical in Drinking Water
An RTE investigation has revealed that water provided to homes in Cavan and Monaghan by a private company was contaminated with a toxic chemical.
The water supply serves 10,000 people in Cavan and Monaghan and was found to be contaminated with phenol, a toxic chemical that was part of a product used to treat the water supply in April.
Veolia Water are the supplier of the water and suspicions arose in April when subscribers began to complain of oral blisters, sores and stomach problems. Currently, a precautionary ban is in place on the Co Monaghan water supply, while service has been restored to Co Cavan.
The chemical, Phenol, was found to be contained in a product that was sold to Veolia by an environmental solutions company, Enva. The product cost a fraction of what the properly produced chemical would have cost Veolia. Enva has stated that it told the end user (Veolia) that the product was not suitable for treating drinking water. However, the technical data supplied with the chemical allegedly does not state that this is the case.
Veolia said that it was "committed to do its utmost to provide good quality water to its customers. Veolia water, which has been involved in group water schemes for more than 7 years, has mobilised extensive resources to address the situation and, at all times has worked in close partnership with all the main stakeholders, the group water schemes, the National Federation of Group Water Schemes, the local authorities and the HSE".
Evna have stated that they are "co-operating fully with the relevant authority investigation into the incident".
