New group calls for regulated cosmetic surgery industry

There has been a new call for suitable regulations to be introduced into the Cosmetic Surgery Industry within Ireland. At present, cosmetic practitioners are unregulated in Ireland. The call has been instigated by a new group which is made up of cosmetic practitioners. The new group has been set-up, in order to fulfill a number of objectives and aims in which they have set out for the industry.

Structure and objectives of association

The group is made up of 20 members and intends to try to lobby the Irish government into taking action in relation to the various aspects of cosmetic surgery.

The actions that the group hopes the government will carry out will be as follows:

  • Regulation of cosmetic services
  • Inspection of cosmetic services
  • Formulate restrictions on certain procedures being carried out
  • Create regulations regarding qualifications that cosmetic surgeons must obtain before being deemed to be qualified

A founding member of the group stated that at present Plastic Surgeons within various hospitals in Ireland have regulations in place and they believe that cosmetic surgeons can work under similar regulations.

Further objectives of association

A further objective of the group is to reduce aspects surrounding the reputation of cosmetic surgery as well as to create a set of rules for certain procedures carried out within the industry e.g. botulinum toxin, laser procedures, as well as the use of some cosmetic filler. These procedures will only be carried out by qualified doctors within the industry.
