Increased concern over C-Diff within Hospital
At an inquest on 27/03/08, evidence was given into the death of an elderly man, who underwent an operation on a broken hip and subsequently whose health detioriated due to contracting the C-Diff superbug within a Dublin hospital.
Post-mortem
A post-mortem was conducted on the elderly man's body and it was found that the cause of death was severe bowel inflammation which as a result spread to his abdomen. One of the contributions to this happening was due to the superbug clostridium difficile (C-Diff).
The lead-up to the tragedy
The elderly man was admitted to a Dublin hospital which was due to having a fractured hip and suffering from pneumonia. The man was subsequently transferred to another Dublin hospital for post-operative rehabilitation following a successful operation.
Over a period of time, the elderly man's condition was progressing well and at this stage his pneumonia was almost resolved. The day after however, his condition detioriated and as a result he was suffering from abdominal pain as well as a high temperature. Two days later, the elderly man's white cell bloodcount had risen and due to this, it was decided that he was to undergo an urgent CT scan. Later that day the man collapsed and was pronounced dead.
Previous Inquest at a Dublin Hospital
At an inquest into the death of a man in January, a Doctor from within the hospital was to initiate the appointment of a microbiologist. The man who died in January within the same hospital also died with the symptoms of pneumonia with C-Diff as a contributory cause.
