Acanthamoeba keratitis 12/02/08
In May 2007, the Irish Medicines Board announced that Advanced Medical Optics (AMO) Complete MoisturePlus Multi Purpose contact lens solution is being recalled from the market with immediate effect. The recall was initiated because of concerns seen on the US market that the product may be associated with an increased occurrence of the serious eye infection Acanthamoeba keratitis.
Acanthamoeba Keratitis
Acanthamoeba is a microscopic, water-borne, parasite that may invade the cornea, causing a potentially devastating eye condition known as Acanthamoeba keratitis. The condition is rare, but is a potentially blinding infection.
Symptoms of Acanthamoeba keratitis include:
-Sensation of having something in the eye
-Watery eyes
-Blurred vision
-Sensitivity to light
-Swelling of the upper eyelid
-Extreme pain in the eye
The diagnosis is confirmed with a microscopic examination of the cells taken from the cornea, using specialised laboratory staining techniques.
If the diagnosis is confirmed, treatment with multiple antibiotics is generally initiated, and hospitalisation is often necessary. Some patients incur severe corneal scarring and require corneal transplantation, even if the infection is brought under control. Severe loss of vision or of the eye may occur, even if the condition is diagnosed early and managed appropriately. Therapy and treatment are long, lasting as much as a year or more.
