Employment Law - Extra month maternity leave

Summary: Expectant mothers will be entitled to 4 weeks extra maternity leave from today

Those who gave birth yesterday will narrowly miss out on the new provision, as it will only apply to mothers of babies born since midnight.

It will bring the total length of paid maternity leave and adoptive leave to 26 weeks or six months. In addition, there will be an increase in the length of optional unpaid leave, from 12 to 16 weeks. An estimated 43,000 women are due to give birth in the next 12 months.

Social and Family Affairs Minister, Seamus Brennan, said that maternity leave spending had increased from IRL£ 58m seven years ago to about €235m now. He said that the Government will continue to look at enhancing the benefits for mothers
