20,000 euro awarded to Leighlinbridge resident after renovations damage

A woman from Leighlinbridge who brought a case against her neighbour last week at Carlow Circuit Court was awarded €20,000 after her home was damaged during the renovation of her neighbour’s home.

Issues arising from renovation

The woman informed the court that she and her neighbour share a common roof over their bathrooms. The builders who were carrying out the renovation climbed onto this common roof with sledge hammers in order to break it up.

As a result of the work carried out by the builders, damage was caused to the woman's side of the roof which led to water falling down the walls of her bathroom which resulted in the light switches being wet as well as the walls and floors being damaged.

The woman also informed the court that the builders had knocked a hole through her sitting room wall unnecessarily which caused further damage to her home.

The court also heard that the woman had to take a €6,000 loan from her Credit Union in order to fix the damage made by the builders to the gutters of her home.

Final ruling

The woman was awarded €15,918.70 for her claim as the judge stated that her neighbour had acted in complete disregard to her and also awarded the woman a further €5,000 and awarded her costs.
