I have just bought a house - what should I do?

Loan Approval

Arrange for Loan Approval from your mortgage adviser, if you haven't already done so. We strongly advise you not to sign any contracts until you have written loan approval.

Solicitor

Tell your Solicitor, so he/she can expect papers to arrive.

Survey

If it's a second-hand house or apartment, we would strongly advice that you have a Survey done by a competent surveyor or engineer. It's important that you are aware of the actual condition of the property from the very beginning. The principle of "buyer beware" applies with second-hand property. The survey should be carried out prior to a purchaser signing contracts for sale.

History of the property

Ask your surveyor/engineer to make enquiries at the local planning office to get details of the history of the property, and to see if there are any planned developments for the area. A road-widening scheme or waste disposal plant nearby may impact on your enjoyment of the property in the future.
