Institutional Abuse
In 2002, the Government established a board called the Residential Institutions Redress Board, to compensate the many thousands of people who had been abused in State-run residential institutions in Ireland during their young lives.
This followed widespread media coverage of personal stories of abuse in institutions by those who ran them and worked there.
